ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester leaders launched a new program aimed at giving kids a financial head start.
Mayor Malik Evans announced the R-Future Fund on Wednesday, Rochester’s first children’s savings account initiative. The program will open accounts for local kindergartners, with seed money to help families begin saving early for education or career training.
City officials said the goal is to build financial literacy and expand opportunity for the next generation.
“We have government, business, schools, nonprofits, all coming together today with a shared vision for the future of this city,” Evans said.
Participants will automatically get a $20 seed deposit in their account upon enrollment. Kids who live in priority zip codes, 14608, 14611, 14605, and 14621, will get an additional $20 equity bonus.
The pilot program is expected to roll out this year, with plans to grow in the future. To learn more about the program, visit the city’s website by clicking here.
