In a special edition of “Exploring Your Creative Genius,” this week’s episode features the first-ever episode aired on 97.9 The Hill.
I occasionally rerun shows and this week’s was the very first show I did for WCHL. I hadn’t listened to it since it was posted on Chapelboro.com over 4 years ago. Perhaps you’ll be able to tell that I wrote and read a script for this show.
I talk about how I have always experienced Chapel Hill as a wonderfully creative place and mention, briefly, the marketing services agency FGI.
We were created back in the late 80’s through the merger of the market research company and the ad agency that were serving Cellular One of the Triangle when I was heading it up. I saw the cellular industry was moving overnight from a thoughtless dismissal of marketing to a near panicked appreciation of the need for it and so helped bring the two firms together to focus on this industry.
And the timing was right on. Every cellular company we pitched gave us at least some of their business, a couple turned over their marketing budgets to us to run for them.
We made INC Magazine’s list of the 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies two years in a row; I forget the exact ranking but we were in the top 100 each year.
The sort of explosive growth we experienced could only happen when there is an abundance of great creative talent available and we found it everywhere. When I look back at that time I see it as a celebration of Chapel Hill.
