Blashill Talks Kantserov Addition, Buyouts? Draft Comps, McCarron Stays, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Scott Powers wrote a really good piece on Roman Kantserov, whose situation is vastly different than previous years. Now, he’s joining the Blackhawks for training camp in September. And there’s a lot of excitement from not only Blackhawks fans, but also those inside the organization to have a supremely talented, skilled forward joining the group they had to close last season.

There are some good comments in the piece from Kantserov, who Powers notes answered most of his questions in English without the need for an interpreter (though one was available and did help occasionally). But I was more interested in the comments from Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill in the story. Blashill said he sees Kantserov working the bumper on the power play and can be a difference maker to that unit.

I especially liked this answer to a question about whether Kantserov is a center or winger when he gets to Chicago:

“I had Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg who would play center, but then at times they would play together, and when those guys played together, it didn’t matter who was the center,” Blashill told Powers. “And so, whoever I piece Roman with, it’s not gonna matter who’s the center. They’re both gonna spend time down low in D-zone coverage. They’re both gonna spend time in the middle of the ice. I think Roman’s skill set, he can be equally as good at wing as at center and vice versa. I just think it’s great to be able to add somebody with that type of versatility, but yet that type of high-end skill set.”

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) June 9, 2026 One other note from Kyle Davidson’s media availability at the Draft Combine last week. He told the media (as relayed by Ben Pope) that he does not anticipate buying anyone’s contract out this summer. Which would mean André Burakovsky and Andrew Mangiapane are… either traded or still on the roster in September. I think a lot of that depends on what happens with the No. 4 pick. If the Blackhawks land Ivar Stenberg, the forward group gets more crowded. As a reminder, the first buyout period begins 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final ends and closes at 4:00 PM CT on June 30 (after the draft ends). My guy Shawn Hutcheon reported the obvious first choice in the NHL draft has already been conveyed — to the player.

A source close to the situation, who was part of the NHL Combine, tells me Toronto told Gavin McKenna during their interview with the player that they intend on drafting him with the first overall pick.

    — Shawn Hutcheon (@ShawnHutcheon) June 9, 2026 I always enjoy reading/hearing who prospects view as their pro comp or which NHL players (past/present) they model their game after. Steven Ellis shared some from the top prospects in the 2026 NHL Draft, and there are some lofty comparisons these young men made for their futures. I also appreciated their honesty, especially defenseman Alberts Šmits, who simply said “I don’t have favorite players.”

    — Steven Ellis (@SEllisHockey) June 9, 2026 Yesterday I put together a mock draft round-up looking at the Blackhawks’ picks from a few outlets. But I want to circle back to Scott Wheeler’s new mock draft at The Athletic that published on Tuesday because there was a name included in his first round that I did not expect: London Knights left-handed defenseman Maksim Sokolovskii. Here’s what Wheeler wrote (which should make it obvious why this got my attention):

The 6-foot-7.25, 240-pound Sokolovskii was the talk of the combine this year. The belief is that he’s going to go in the first round and potentially as early as the early 20s. He’s a physical specimen who can move, and while his game is still very raw in a lot of areas, he started to put his game together in the second half of his rookie season in the OHL this year. He’s the Flyers’ type, and they have a track record with the London Knights. If [Tommy] Bleyl is still here, I could see them targeting him over Sokolovskii as well.

Some of the top prospects in the 2026 NHL Draft were at the Stanley Cup Final last night, and a few got invited to chat with the guys on Sportsnet. Here’s a bit from Keaton Verhoeff and Caleb Malhotra.

    — Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) June 10, 2026 Adam Kimelman at NHL.com ranked the top ten goaltenders in the 2026 NHL Draft class. This isn’t a top-of-mind position for the Blackhawks, but… it wasn’t when they drafted Adam Gajan in the second round in 2023. Solid list here.

    — Mike Morreale (@mikemorrealeNHL) June 10, 2026 You can scratch one potential Blackhawks UFA target off the board. The Minnesota Wild re-signed Michael McCarron to a six-year deal that reportedly has a $3.3M cap hit. As a reminder, McCarron turned 31 in March.

    — Michael Russo (@RussoHockey) June 9, 2026 Sebastian Cossa’s name continues to float around the interwebs. Kevin Weekes linked the Utah Mammoth to him on Twitter on Tuesday. Earlier this week, Brendan Gallagher’s agent, Gerry Johansson, told the Donnie and Dhali Show that the Canadiens wing has spoken with the Canucks about a potential fit. Gallagher emotionally shared that he had likely played his final game for Montreal after the Habs were eliminated. The NHLPA has reportedly hit the brakes on the Oilers’ coaching search. According to reports, the Players Association formally asked the NHL to do a full investigation into Mike Babcock’s previous behavior and the end of his… “tenure” in Columbus before allowing him to interview for/accept the Edmonton gig. Stay tuned here… Finally, the NHL announced Gabriel Landeskog as this year’s winner of both the Mark Messier Leadership Award and the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. And, once again, the surprise was worth it. It was an incredibly close final vote for the Masterton, with Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin finishing second and former Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews finishing third. Current Blackhawks goaltender Spencer Knight finished tenth in the final voting for the Masterton.
