ROCHESTER, N.Y. – This is the time of year when many of us are eager to spend more time outdoors with our pets. Whether you are walking the dog or the dog is walking you, the warmer weather provides a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the day.
I would like to introduce you to Yogi (be sure to watch my video for a photo). Yogi was our family dog for many years, a lovable Lab-Beagle mix with plenty of personality. He loved exploring the neighborhood, following every interesting scent, and taking advantage of pleasant weather whenever he could. Our family enjoyed many years with him.
As temperatures climb from warm to hot, however, outdoor conditions can become challenging—not only for us, but for our dogs as well.
One important factor many pet owners overlook is the ground temperature. When air temperatures rise above 80 degrees, surfaces such as asphalt can heat up much more quickly than the surrounding air. On sunny days, especially when the Sun is high in the sky, black asphalt can reach temperatures exceeding 130 degrees. When air temperatures approach 90 degrees, pavement temperatures can climb even higher, sometimes surpassing 140 degrees.
Those temperatures can be dangerous for a dog’s sensitive paw pads. Hot pavement can cause discomfort, burns, and heat-related stress in a surprisingly short amount of time.
So how can you tell if it is too hot? A simple rule of thumb is this: if the pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it is probably too hot for your dog’s paws. Consider walking your pet on grassy surfaces whenever possible or schedule walks during the cooler hours of the morning or evening. And do not forget to bring water to help keep your furry companion hydrated.
With a little planning and awareness, you and your pet can safely enjoy the summer season together.
After all, this is one cautionary “tail” that is worth remembering for our four-legged friends.
