Man in custody after large police investigation, SWAT response in South Elgin

A man is in custody hours after an investigation in South Elgin prompted officials to ask residents to avoid an area of the suburb amid a heavy police response, including from SWAT teams, on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 2:34 p.m. after a patrol officer with the South Elgin Police Department observed a man known to have multiple felony arrest warrants out of Kane County — later identified as 56-year-old Wasfi M. Farooqui — standing on the 500 block of Oakwood Lane, police said.

The officer attempted to take Farooqui into custody, but he resisted, minorly injured the officer by striking him, and fled into his house, police said.

When additional officers arrived on scene, they entered the house to try to take Farooqui into custody and he then barricaded himself inside a bedroom and threatened to shoot the officers, police said. The officers then “tactically disengaged and established a perimeter around the residence,” SEPD said.

Several neighboring police agencies, fire departments and Kane County Sheriff’s Office and SWAT responded to the incident to assist SEPD, police said. An operational command was established at nearby Jim Hansen Park while officers spoke with Farooqui in an attempt to deescalate the situation and get him to peacefully surrender.

Aerial footage captured by NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed several a large police and fire department presence in the parking lot of the park.

Officers in tactical gear and a sheriff rescue truck were also seen in the area by a viewer named Diane Znamierowski, who shared photos with NBC Chicago.

“After de-escalation efforts and negotiations were unsuccessful, Kane County SWAT officers entered the residence and took the subject into custody without further incident,” SEPD said in a statement.

Farooqui was out on pre-trial release for numerous charges in Kane County. Following an investigation into Tuesday’s incident, Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of aggravated resisting arrest, threatening a public official and two counts of resisting a police officer. He remains in custody at the Kane County Jail, police said.

    Authorities are continuing to investigate.
