ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The former Rochester psychiatric ward, located at 1201 Elmwood Avenue, will soon be demolished using $20 million in state funding. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the plan during a stop in Monroe County.
The Terrance Building has been vandalized and broken into, becoming an eyesore for many people in the area. “I want this to happen. It will result in almost 400-500 housing units,” Hochul said.
Mayor Malik Evans said he wants the demolition done as soon as possible. The timeline depends on when the money arrives. Evans also noted the building contains asbestos.
“There are developers that are interested already. But this makes this makes, the move could not happen without the building coming down. The building didn’t come down. Any of the plans don’t mean anything. This was the key component. The sequencing had to be right. And the governor did. And putting this in the budget allows it now to move from paper to reality,” Evans said.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badžić went to Elmwood Road to speak with residents who live directly across from the asylum, but they did not answer the door.
She found a couple doing work for their niece who seemed excited about the demolition. “Really? Nice! Finally!” the neighbors said when told about the announcement.
There is no exact timeline yet, but Evans said once the funds arrive, there should be a better understanding of when demolition will begin. The Terrance Building has been vacant since it closed in 1995. It opened in 1969 and served as a mental ward.
Over many decades, there have been redevelopment proposals, but none went through.
