Ahead of the Diamond Heels’ appearance in the Men’s College World Series this weekend, UNC’s Caden Glauber has been named as a co-recipient of Perfect Game’s National Freshman Pitcher of the Year award. Glauber shares the award with Sam Cozart of Texas, who will also be playing in Omaha.

“Glauber has been arguably the most important piece of the Heels’ success,” Perfect Game wrote in its release. “Handling most any role from closer, to long reliever, to starter, Glauber can give his club length or eliminate the scoring threat in a short stint when necessary… UNC is back in Omaha for the second time in the last three seasons and if Glauber has anything to do with it, they could win it all.”

Glauber, who has already been a first team All-ACC honoree and the league’s Freshman of the Year, ranks in the top 10 nationally in several major categories. His 2.20 earned run average ranks seventh, his 10 wins rank eighth and his 5.73 hits allowed per nine innings rank 10th. Glauber, who is the age of a high school senior after reclassifying up a year to join UNC early, is the first Carolina pitcher ever to earn a national freshman of the year honor (third baseman Colin Moran won Perfect Game’s Freshman Hitter of the Year award in 2011).

Glauber started UNC’s Super Regional Game 3 victory against USC Sunday. Though he left on the hook for a loss and eventually was credited with a no decision, Glauber still logged a career-high 7.1 innings and struck out a career-high 11 Trojan batters. His 11 strikeouts were the most by any UNC pitcher this season. Sunday’s 4-3 win also ensured the continuation of a remarkable streak: Carolina is a perfect 25-0 in games in which Glauber has pitched this season. Glauber’s 10-0 record is also historic: he has the most wins without a defeat for a freshman pitcher in the 21st century.

Glauber and the Diamond Heels will play their opening Men’s College World Series game Friday night against Ole Miss at 7 p.m. Eastern time.
