In the list of the most well-known sitcoms to grace TV screens, Married... with Children is among the fan favorites. Despite having been one of Fox's longest-running sitcoms, it met an untimely and not well-received end in 1997.
Starring Ed O'Neill and Katey Sagal as married couple Al Bundy and Margaret "Peggy" Bundy, the sitcom gained traction for its use of comedy and episode themes that were considered taboo at the time. One episode was even banned from airing due to its sexual themes. Regardless, the sitcom ran for a total of 11 seasons, focusing on the Chicago family living their daily lives, with the occasional interruption of their pesky neighbors.
Married... with Childrenaired in early April 1987, with a theme song sung by Frank Sinatra that also gained critical acclaim. Despite its mixed reviews and loyal fanbase, the sitcom didn't do well in ratings due to Fox not having the affiliate base with CBS, NBC, and ABC for the series to reach the entire country.
It was also said that many Fox series, as the time didn't do well, with Married... with Children up against Murder She Wrote in the weekend time slot. Tragedy struck when Fox decided to cancel the sitcom without much notice. Due to many believing it would have been renewed for a 12th and final season, the sitcom never had a proper finale.
Fox aired two new episodes on May 19, and later released an unaired episode on June 9, 1997, that acted as an impromptu end to the sitcom. "Chicago Shoe Exchange" was directed by Mark K. Samuels and written by Eric Abrams and Matthew Berry. In the episode, Al and another character begin bartering at the New Market Mall when they encounter a massage chair. They soon land in hot water with security as Kelly practices her new massage techniques.
According to reports, the abrupt cancellation of the sitcom wasn't made aware to the main cast. They learned the news from low-level employees instead of the actual Fox executives. Sagal previously said that the sitcom often felt neglected by the network, while O'Neill attributed the neglect to the constant change in higher-up positions.
In a 2013 interview, the actor even theorized that TV stations that had syndication rights pushed Fox and Sony to end the sitcom. He felt it was due to the series having far too many episodes needed for syndication, as Married... with Children aired 259 episodes.
