Hey everyone. Another META post, as we have a few things to get to today, including a question for you regulars/commenters. Let’s start there, I guess.
How Do We Feel About Disqus?
I’m not anywhere close to actually doing this, but I am starting to consider replacing Disqus with something lighter (on the page) to improve performance. Also, something without ads, from which we don’t even benefit (that goes directly to Disqus). Also, something that you can single-sign on if you are a BN member. Won’t require that ever, just a little less friction for those of you who do subscribe.
The only reason I’m hesitating is that I probably won’t do that if you guys are dead-set on keeping Disqus for whatever reason.
Any new commenting system we put in place would still have upvotes/downvotes, threads, etc. All the usual bells and whistles. I’m just so sick of Disqus erroring out all the time *and also* it is a real drag on site performance.
So let me know: Would you mind if we went away from Disqus, or do you definitely want to keep it?
Fixing Errors
I know I have not fixed the HTTP 400 errors and blank screens for EVERYONE, but after this morning, it should be a lot better for most people.
If you have experienced an improvement, please let me know in the comments.
If you are still having the problem, please let me know that too. I will keep hunting for more fixes, but we did uncover and solve one of (what we think was) the biggest culprits.
In the meantime, a little preview: We have a much bigger site overhaul (back-end only, no changes to your layout or whatever) coming in the next month or so that we’re really excited about. It *should* prevent the site from going down … pretty much ever again. We’re not there yet, though; so, just stay tuned.
New Features
I’m still working on a handful of new features, but among the smaller updates lately, we’ve added W/L outcomes to the Cubs schedule page. I am also planning on adding individual player pages at some point, so you can click on a player and see his stats, related articles, etc. all from the stats page.
You may have also noticed that some of our in-article images have hotspots (buttons you can click) with little facts and figures. Small thing, but hope you like it. We’ve also been able to incorporate some new HTML graphs and stuff lately. Trying to add value without taking anything away.
Those images look like this, in case you haven’t seen one:
1 2 3 × Denis Poroy-Imagn ImagesIf you have any ideas like that, please let me know, and I'll do my best to add them to the pipeline!
Live Event
And finally, please join us at Frontier this June 25 to watch the Cubs take on the Mets! It's a free watch party, with, as always, an open bar from 5-730. If you register for the event, you can save your spot and get early entry (i.e. early access to the bar).
