Rio Las Vegas is hoping to become a go-to destination for large groups by offering the gatherings an allotment of guestrooms free of resort fees.

(Image: Shutterstock)The off-Strip casino resort recently announced that resort fees will be waived for all group bookings, defined as “10 or more attendees.” The promotion is limited to midweek bookings, or Sunday through Thursday stays.
Planners have told us for years that resort fees are one of the most exhausting parts of contracting in Las Vegas. They complicate budgets and create doubt at exactly the wrong moment,” said Ashley Lowe, senior vice president of sales at Rio Las Vegas.
“We want Rio to be the easiest ‘yes’ in this market, and that means being upfront about value from day one,” Lowe added.
Rio offers more than 200,000 square feet of customizable meeting space along with 2,520 guestrooms, with 1,500 of the suite-sized occupancies newly renovated.
Resort Fees Waived
Rio Las Vegas is trying to attract convention planners by doing away with resort fees, the pesky costs that critics say are simply a way to gouge customers by tacking on a nightly fee for common services like Wi-Fi, local calling, daily newspapers, and boarding pass printing.
Rio charges guests a $50 per night resort fee, with the charge on travelers supposedly providing in-room Wi-Fi, fitness center and pool access, local and toll-free in-room phone calls, complimentary self and valet parking, and 50% off select entertainment, including Penn & Teller. The $50 a night add-on is also subject to the Clark County room tax.
Along with dropping the resort fee for midweek groups, Rio is lending a $500 shipping and receiving credit to the gatherings, one suite upgrade for every 75 room nights, and one complimentary room for every 40 rooms booked. The planner also stands to receive double Hyatt loyalty points and a 20% discount on AV services provided by the resort’s third-party provider. Rio joined the World of Hyatt loyalty network in March 2024.
“By waiving resort fees entirely, Rio Las Vegas is taking a bold, definitive step to simplify the planning process and deliver clearer value for both attendees and organizations,” the casino release declared.
Resort Fees Now Included in Upfront Price
In late 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) implemented the “Junk Fees Rule” that prohibits the bait-and-switch pricing practice of tacking on resort fees at the end of the online room booking process. Casino hotels must now include the resort fee in their upfront advertised nightly room rate.
“People deserve to know up-front what they’re being asked to pay without worrying that they’ll later be saddled with mysterious fees that they haven’t budgeted for and can’t avoid,” said FTC Chair Lina Khan.
The junk fees rule applies not only to hotels but also to ticketed events and vacation rentals.
