Glenn McGrath names fast bowlers who could replace Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc

The pace bowling attack of Australia will be under fire in the next 14 months as they are scheduled to play at least 20 Test matches. Test format is amongst the formats where the Aussies have fetched a substantial amount of success in recent times. The bowling combinations of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood have been invincible for years.

There are no more youngsters; they are well over thirties, and by the rule of time, they will gradually edge past their prime. Before that, the cricket board will have to find the torchbearers who will be capable of moving the team ahead.

Cricket legend Glenn McGrath is keeping his eyes open on the transition. The upcoming Ashes, which will be in England, will be crucial for the Baggy Greens. In the previous Ashes series, which was held on their home turf, Mitchell Starc wreaked havoc, taking 31 wickets.

Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood, all of them have grown injury crises and issues related to fitness. Cummins played just once in last season's Ashes due to a back injury, and Hazlewood didn't feature at all.

“Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins are all in their mid-to-late thirties, aren't they? You wonder how long they can go. I look at it from an Australian perspective in Test cricket. The Ashes is coming up next year in England, and Australia has not won an Ashes series in England outright since 2001,” Glenn McGrath said during an interaction at the MRF Academy in Chennai on Monday.

Glenn McGrath mentioned a few emerging Australian pacers.

Through their domestic tournaments, multiple young pacers have climbed the ranks. McGrath mentioned a few names during his brief. But most of the emerging bowlers are young and lack experience in international cricket. So, currently it will be very early to say which of the new quicks will represent the national team in the future, in the place of the pace trio.

“But I think there's opportunity for quite a few young guys at the moment. Guys like Spencer Johnson have some real pace, but whether they've had enough opportunity? I know [Nathan] Ellis has been for a while and [Xavier] Bartlett, they are the next level [in white-ball cricket],” the former seamer mentioned.

“You've also got Will Sutherland, Jack Edwards, and Brendan Doggett. Plenty of young guys there, but we'll wait and see if someone really puts their hands up.”

Glenn McGrath mentioned the raw talents in the Sheffield Shield

Glenn McGrath highlights the importance of the Sheffield Shield, where a bunch of quality fast bowlers grind hard. Liam Hatcher, Cameron Ganon, and Nathan McAndrew were among the leading wicket-takers in the 2025-26 season.

“A lot of it comes back to Shield cricket, I think. I don't know their exact stats in Shield cricket, but state cricket in Australia is quite competitive. South Australia has won back-to-back, and a couple of their guys have done well. There's going to be opportunities out there, and we'll see once they get there,” the 56-year-old Glenn McGrath further said.
