Irondequoit landslide repair could cost homeowners up to $1 million, residents appeal to Gov. Kathy Hochul for help
Erosion threat continues to plague Irondequoit neighbors

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — More than two months after a landslide affected two Irondequoit neighbors, homeowners are revealing the massive cost to fix the damage.

The landslide has been affecting two Irondequoit neighbors on Carlsam Drive since April. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski measured the distance from the landslide to one home and found it to be 9 feet and 4 inches away, as it was in mid-April. The drop into the pit itself is about 25 feet.

The landslide forced the Rin family to completely evacuate their home by order of the Irondequoit fire marshal. Next door, Dave Stafford is working to prevent the same thing from happening to his home, especially with a baby on the way.

Stafford said while efforts have been made to prevent further damage, there are only two permanent ways to fix the problem, and neither are cheap.

“We’ve had quite a few engineering firms help out. One gave us a quote just to stabilize the property, to not lose any more on our site, only of $250,000, plus or minus a little bit. And then if we wanted to recover the land that was lost, if we wanted to do the whole cliff to including the neighbor’s property here, I mean, be looking in the neighborhood of 750 to 1 million,” Stafford said.

Stafford said they have been in touch with several government offices, from the Town of Irondequoit to the Monroe County Water Authority and even the state. While many have been helpful, the only hope he has of realistically getting the issue fixed is by direct help from the governor’s office.

“Quite frankly, the governor is the only one who’s going to be able to pull the trigger on this. Kathy Hochul, if you’re watching, please give us a hand,” Stafford said.
