It has been the home to prisons since it was formed in the 1960’s, and now Crest Hill has been selected by the Illinois Department of Corrections to be the location of its two newest facilities.
The IDOC announced that the city, 40 miles southwest of Chicago, will be the site of a 1,500-bed men’s prison and an 800-bed women’s facility.
Crest Hill mayor Ray Soliman said he is excited about the news.
“It means a lot of jobs, a lot of union jobs for our union workers in the city of Crest Hill and the surrounding communities,” Soliman said Monday.
He credits the city’s good working relationship with the IDOC and the available land at Stateville Correctional Facility, which was closed almost two years ago.
The announcement comes as a major disappointment to the downstate city of Lincoln, the current home to the Logan Correctional Center for women. That facility will close when the new Crest Hill facility opens.
“This is a big hit to us,” said Illinois State Senator Sally Turner (R-Benson).
It is the latest in a series of economic blows to the Central Illinois town located between Bloomington and Springfield.
“These jobs, the correctional officers in this area, that’s one of the main jobs that’s a good paying job in our area,” State Sen. Sally Turner said.
The move away from both Stateville and Logan had been in the works for years.
Current and former Stateville inmates complained publicly about the crumbling and and unsafe 100-year-old facility, and officials say the cost to renovate Logan rivalled the cost of a new prison.
Crest Hill was chosen, according to Soliman, because it has the room to accommodate both facilities.
“Operationally, it’s going to be less cost for construction with the building of both sites here,” he said.
In its heyday, Stateville had between 4,000-to-4,500 inmates. Soliman says together the new prisons could bring close that number of inmates back to the Crest Hill area.
No construction date has been set, but the process is expected to take about five years.
