ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The start of the World Cup is just days away, and the City of Rochester will be welcoming fans for a free watch party on Friday.
One local soccer program is taking advantage of the hype. The Flower City Union and Flower City 1872, two of Rochester’s pre-professional soccer teams, opened the Flower City Shop on East and Alexander.
Brennan Shanahan, the director of club operations for the Flower City Union, is usually more worried about how his team is playing on the pitch. But he’s been working to get the shop ready for Friday’s event.
“Obviously, as you can kind of tell, some of the colors in here don’t necessarily match our overall theme,” Shanahan said. “A few more things need to go on the ground, like some carpet, maybe some other furniture.”
When asked if running a store was in his job description, Shanahan laughed and said no.
The Flower City Shop will be selling merchandise and drinks for Friday’s watch party, hoping to reignite some passion in the Flower City.
“We are trying to be back, becoming Soccer Town, USA,” said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans.
That’s the slogan of the now-defunct Rochester Rhinos, who obviously never competed in the World Cup but won the U.S. Open Cup in 1999. That was the peak of Rochester soccer, with packed crowds and passionate fans.
“There’s been a ton of great history here within the sport,” Shanahan said. “And here at Flower City, we’re trying to build on that and kind of continue what some former clubs have done in the past.”
On Friday, whether at the Flower City Shop or any other bar on East and Alexander, both Shanahan and Mayor Evans are hoping to bring that passion for soccer back.
“This will be World Cup headquarters for Rochester,” Evans said.
“East and Alexander, 5 to 11 [pm] this coming Friday,” Evans said. “We want everyone to come out, come out and enjoy some great soccer here in Soccer Town, USA.”
The event is run by the Gianinny Brothers. There will be live music and a giveaway including two tickets to a World Cup game in Toronto. The Flower City Shop will be open through July.
