Caleb Williams carries himself with a sense of bravado that no Chicago Bears quarterback has shown since Jim McMahon was lacing ’em up in the 1980s.
So, of course, Williams believes he can beat the Madden Curse:
After we wrapped speaking with Caleb Williams a few minutes ago, a fan at the Madden event asked Williams whether he’d break the Madden curse. Williams pointed at the person and said “damn right” before walking off.
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) June 5, 2026If anyone is going to beat the Madden Curse, it’s Caleb Williams. Right? Seriously, I want you to stop and think about it for a moment. What is a video game cover jinx to someone who has three wins against the Green Bay Packers in his last four games against Chicago’s arch-rivals? Is a quarterback coming off a season in which he broke the franchise’s single-season passing yards record supposed to be afraid of a little video game voodoo? Should the quarterback who orchestrated The Greatest Comeback in Franchise History in a playoff game against the aforementioned Packers be shaking in his cleats? Nah.
INSIDE CALEB WILLIAMS’ RECORD-SETTING 2025
Besides, Caleb Williams survived the coaching incompetence of Matt Eberflus and the offensive ineptitude of Shane Waldron. If he can do that, then I am convinced there isn’t anything he can’t do. And that includes beating the dreaded Madden Curse.

For those who are unfamiliar, the infamous Madden cover jinx is supposed to doom whoever graces it. Sometimes, it looks like a fall-off in production. Other times, it is an injury. It’s silly and superstitious, but there is no proof of its existence. If anything, the Madden Curse is one of those things that opens us up to a causation vs. correlation debate. I guess we have to do something to pass the time between now and the start of the regular season.
If anyone is suited to beat the Madden cover jinx, it is Caleb Williams. Williams has he accomplished so much in his first two years as he has gone about toppling the Bears quarterback curse, which is a far more powerful hex. But he also knows someone who has already beaten it, Tom Brady — a quarterback Williams idolizes. So perhaps it makes sense that Williams’ response to a question about the Madden Curse was strikingly similar to what Brady said about it when he was put on the cover of Madden NFL ’18.
“The ‘Madden NFL 18’ cover is a great honor for me,” Brady said in 2017, via CBS Sports. “Especially since I have been playing the game since growing up next to EA headquarters in the Bay area. I’m not one to believe in curses, so I’m ready to take the challenge head on like always! It doesn’t stand a chance!”

With Caleb Williams appearing on the Madden NFL ’27 cover, let’s take a quick look at recent quarterbacks and how they fared after getting on the Madden cover:
2024: Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills — Led the Bills to the playoffs by racking up another season of 40+ total touchdowns. Verdict: Not cursed. 2022: Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) and Tom Brady (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) — Brady threw for more than 5,000 yards in his age-33 season, while Mahomes threw 37 touchdowns and led the Chiefs to the AFC Championship Game. Verdict: Not cursed. 2021: Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens — The passing numbers took a dip, but he still ran for 1,000+ yards and led the Ravens to the postseason. Verdict: Not cursed. 2020: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs — Threw for 4,000+ yards, posted a 26-5 TD-INT ratio, and won his first Super Bowl. Verdict: Not cursed. 2018: Tom Brady, New England Patriots — Brady and the Pats lost an epic Super Bowl to the Eagles, but it’s not as if it was the QB’s fault. He threw for 500+ yards in defeat and was crowned the league’s MVP. Hard to put this in the cursed column given the totality of everything. Verdict: Not cursed. 2011: Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints — Tossed a career-high 22 interceptions and was the quarterback who lost a playoff game to a 7-9 Seahawks team. Verdict: Cursed. Tork Mason/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin 2009: Brett Favre, Green Bay Packers — Threw a career-high 22 interceptions, suffered a shoulder injury, and made unsavory headlines off the field. Verdict: Cursed. 2008: Vince Young, Tennessee Titans — Threw more interceptions (17) than touchdowns (9) just one year after winning the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year. Verdict: Cursed. 2006: Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles — McNabb’s run of five consecutive Pro Bowls ended as he missed seven games and posted a 4-5 record as a starter. Verdict: Cursed. 2004: Michael Vick, Atlanta Falcons — Suffered a fractured fibula that caused him to miss all but five games. Verdict: Cursed. 2002: Daunte Culpepper, Minnesota Vikings — Missed six games due to injuries, threw almost as many interceptions (13) as touchdowns (14), and posted a 4-7 record in 11 starts. Verdict: Cursed. QUARTERBACKS VS. Perhaps we should consult WWE superstar Danhausen, and give him human monies just to cover our bases.
ESPN’s recently released fantasy quarterback projections have Caleb Williams going for 3,821 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The site’s NFL FPI projections for 2026 have the Bears winning nine games and posting the seventh-most wins in the NFC, which would put them firmly in the playoff picture. If Williams leads the Bears to the playoffs and posts another 3,800+ yard passing season, it would go a long way toward making us forget about this curse conversation.
