Local woman honored as real-life ‘Rosie the Riveter’ for her service during WWII

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A local woman was honored for her service during World War II during a trip to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Mary Masciangelo returned to Rochester on Sunday after being honored as a real-life “Rosie the Riveter.”

More than 30 “Rosies” were honored in New Orleans with the American Spirit Award. At age 16, Masciangelo helped to produce critical supplies for soldiers overseas during the war.

“I inspected pens for the parachutes and put temples on the glasses for the Air Force,” Masciangelo said.

When she landed at the Rochester airport, people greeted her with flowers, including a couple dressed like Rosie the Riveter. Mary helped with the war effort from 1943 to 1946. She said women on the job rarely spoke to each other because they could not afford to make mistakes.
