A couple of days before Australia’s white-ball away series against Bangladesh, Cricket Australia (CA) had to deal with multiple injuries and fitness concerns to protect their top brass talents. The next few months are going to be very vital for Australia as they are scheduled to take part in multiple top-end series.
Australia will face Bangladesh in Bangladesh for 3 T20Is, followed by 3 ODIs without some of their mainstays. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh are among the two star batters who have been rested from the white-ball bilateral series for separate reasons.
Mitchell Marsh is yet to recover completely from an ankle injury, which did not allow playing in Pakistan. Travis Head, who also missed the Pakistan series, was named for the Bangladesh contest. Still, now, as the cricket governing body of Australia put his workload management under the scanner, the opener has been ruled out of the series. Head missed the series against Pakistan because of his IPL 2026 commitments with the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Legspinner Tanveer Sangha has also been ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury in Pakistan. CA has named Todd Murphy as his replacement in the upcoming white-ball series, starting on June 9 in Mirpur. Murphy, who has played 7 Tests so far, has earned his first white-ball call-up.
As the replacements for Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, Cricket Australia has elected Matt Short and Ollie Peake. Both of them have retained their spots from the Pakistan leg.
“Travis was initially selected in the ODI and T20I legs of this Bangladesh tour but has subsequently been granted personal leave for both. We look forward to seeing him again for the top-end Test series against Bangladesh,” national selector Tony Dodemaide informed in his official statement.
Josh Inglis will lead Australia in the ODIs vs Bangladesh
As Marsh and Head are both missing out on the tour, Josh Inglis is expected to continue as the stand-in skipper initially for the ODI series. He will also be in charge of leading the team in the T20Is if Mitchell Marsh remains unfit to take the field.
According to the original plans, Marsh was about to lead the team in both of the formats. The injury he picked up during the injury has been preventing him from playing the ODIs. CA officials are hopeful for his recovery ahead of the T20I series, which is scheduled to start from June 17 in Chattogram.
“We were hopeful Mitch Marsh would be available for the Bangladesh ODI series; however, he is still returning to full fitness from an ankle injury. Mitch will join the group in Dhaka and begin preparations for the T20I series,” Tony Dodemaide added.
