FAIRPORT, N.Y. — A tree branch fell on a vendor tent at Canal Days in Fairport on Saturday, injuring multiple people during a period of strong winds.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow was at the scene on Main Street where the incident happened. The branch came down from a tree onto the vendor tent below, causing the tent to collapse on people inside.
The Fairport Fire Department treated five patients at the scene. Two people were taken to the hospital for further treatment.
“There were some people in the tent that the tent kind of collapsed on them. We treated them with the ambulance for five patients, then turned over the ambulance, two were taken to hospital to kind of kind of clean up after that, and that’s all,” said Lieutenant Greg Gulick with the Fairport Fire Department.
The winds picked up midday during the festival. People at the event commented on how strong the winds were on News10NBC’s Facebook pages and expressed concern for those hurt.
The Fairport Fire Department was ready to respond and said although it was windy, the incident seemed to be a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. “Was a little windy by the lawn. Kind of a freak thing with the tree. But, you know, we kept going. Watch the weather. Make sure that everything was, you know, safe,” Gulick said.
The department had crews set up nearby, which allowed for a quick response. “We have crews here all day, so we were able to get there real quick, you know, it’s worth having somebody here. And we were there within a matter of a minute or two,” Gulick mentioned.
The Fairport Fire Department could not share information about the condition of the people hospitalized. News10NBC is working to learn more about their conditions.
