This 90s Country Icon Releases Her First Studio Album in 12 Years

On Friday, June 5, Jo Dee Messina released her first studio album in a dozen years with the release of Bridges, which has already received critical acclaim from the likes of outlets including American Songwriter, Billboard, and Taste of Country.

Over the past decade, Jo Dee has encountered bumps both minor and heartbreaking: loss, struggle, and sicknesses that might have wrecked someone without glimmers of light to hold onto. Her music. Her children. Her faith. And all of it is woven throughout Bridges.

“I was writing songs with other people for other artists and people were like, ‘You should cut this,’” Jo Dee told Kelly Clarkson on her appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I wrote another one and they were like, ‘You should cut this.’ It’s so different from when I used to write when there was a whole system in place with a record label, a promotion staff and all that stuff. I was like, ‘I don’t have a label.’  I was writing with a guy named David Spencer, whose a producer, who said, ‘I’ll help you put the record together if you want. These songs are really great.’”

So, Jo Dee said yes and now that the album is out, she’s following it up with a tour, which begins June 11 at The Bluestone in Columbus, OH, and runs through March 6 of next year with her final performance at Crystal Grand Music Theatre in Wisconsin Dells, WI. But first, she will perform at the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday, June 9.

“It’s funny to try to construct that set list,” Jo Dee told Kelly about the need to combine her previous hit songs -- "Heads Carolina, Tails California,” “Bye Bye,” “Bring on the Rain” and “Stand Beside Me.” “You’ll be getting on the bus and hear ‘I can’t believe you didn’t sing that song. I can’t go home.’  So you’ve got to pick those and sprinkle the new ones in there.”

Written almost solely by Jo Dee, Bridges stands as her most authentic and personal work to date, a deeply reflective journey through heartbreak and healing, faith and perseverance, challenges and growth, and the unwavering resilience that has defined her over the past decade.
