Shreyas Iyer is on the brink of becoming the next captain of India’s T20I team- for the last couple of days, multiple reliable sources have confirmed the development. If all of those claims are to be believed, then the national team selection committee is all set to sack Suryakumar Yadav from the leadership role.
While some of the former cricketers and cricket experts welcome the possible decision in advance, Ravichandran Ashwin believes it will be the wrong decision if the selectors appoint Shreyas Iyer as the captain for the shortest format.
‘Someone who wasn't even on the team, how can he do the captaincy?’ Ravichandran Ashwin straightaway raises the question as he played a T20I for the Men in Blue in December 2023. He has played 51 matches for the national side in the format, but missed more than a couple of years, which has forced Ashwin to think differently.
“Someone who wasn't even on the team, how can he do the captaincy? I read somewhere that Shreyas Iyer will be the team's captain. I just want to ask how someone who wasn't even there in the T20 World Cup squad can make the captain now,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’.
“I have a lot of time for Shreyas. When he wasn't picked, we talked about it for a long time. But this is also wrong. He cannot be made the captain straightaway. But anyway, the bigger point is that there should be stability,” he added further.
Shreyas Iyer can be seen leading Team India in the UK
After the conclusion of the ongoing bilateral home series against Afghanistan, Team India will fly to the United Kingdom to face Ireland and then England. The Men in Blue are scheduled to face Ireland for a 2-match T20I series, followed by a white-ball series against England, where a 5-match T20I series will be held.
It is speculated that Shreyas Iyer will make his comeback in the T20I team as the leader of the team, and the upcoming tour in the UK will be his first assignment.
There is no doubt over Iyer’s captaincy skills as he has proved his leadership qualities on multiple occasions in the Indian Premier League with the Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and now with the Punjab Kings, respectively.
Along with the extra responsibility of leading a team, the middle-order batter knows how to score runs under pressure. In the 2025 season, when they took the Punjab Kings to the final, Shreyas Iyer scored 604 runs, and in the 19th edition of the T20 tournament, he aggregated 498 runs.
BCCI appointed Iyer as Shubman Gill's deputy
Last year, when the national team selectors named Shreyas Iyer the deputy of Shubman Gill for the One Day International format, it became clear that Iyer had impressed the selectors as well with his leadership skills.
The Ajit Agarkar-led All India Senior Men's Selection Committee will announce the teams for the Ireland, England series and the Asian Games today (June 6).
