Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, the third part of Square Enix's ambitious remake project, was revealed at the Summer Game Fest opening showcase.
Following on from Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Revelation will draw this trilogy to a close and adapt the final stages of the original Final Fantasy VII.
But what else do we know about the game? Keep on reading for all the essential FF7 Revelation information that you need to know.
When is the Final Fantasy VII: Revelation release date?
The Final Fantasy VII: Revelation release date will occur in 2027, Square Enix has confirmed, and we even know the specific season of the year that they're aiming for.
The developers have stated that they're aiming for a Spring 2027 release, which, to our understanding, would suggest an April or May launch for the game. The original FF7 remake had an April release, which makes that month sound particularly possible in our mind.
For now, that's a pretty precise release window to aim for, and you should still have plenty of time to play (or replay) the previous two games in preparation... if you get started fairly soon.
In terms of platforms, we know that the game will launch simultaneously on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
When the exact FF7 Revelation release date is confirmed, we'll be sure to update this page.
What to expect from Final Fantasy VII: Revelation
As for what to expect from FF7 Revelation, director Naoki Hamaguchi has offered this description: "In this title, centred around 'resolve,' Cloud and his companions will confront their respective convictions and continue their journey towards the final battle that will determine the planet’s fate.
"All the stories and emotions accumulated over the years will culminate in the most satisfying way with this experience, brought to you as the series’ final chapter."
As for actual plot details, the official press release also adds this synopsis: "Cloud Strife and his loyal companions face a world that teeters on the brink of annihilation.
"Grieving a beloved ally, and with their nemesis Sephiroth nearing godhood, the party takes to the skies aboard the airship Highwind in a race against time to stop Meteor, the ultimate destructive magic, and the total obliteration of the planet."
As for gameplay, the latest trailer showcased an impressive open-world experience that will allow you to skydive off the Highwind and land wherever you want on the continent below. It also showed off the FITS system, which will allow you to equip different costumes that come with unique buffs. And it showed some giant Kaiju-sized enemies that you'll have to take on.
