Keith Hilsinger of Greece said his garage door broke in May. He searched online for garage door repair and clicked on what appeared to be a local company with a 585 number.
Hilsinger: “And I did an internet search for garage door repair.”
Berkeley: “And it popped up.”
Hilsinger: “Yeah, popped up. A whole list and I think that may have been the top one.”
The website looked professional and displayed a 585 area code. Hilsinger thought he was calling someone local.
A repairman arrived in an unmarked truck and charged a $1,400 down payment. He did not show up for a month.
Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean found every victim who called a 585 number on these garage door websites had repairmen arrive in unmarked trucks with inflated prices.
Hamburg Door in Buffalo became so frustrated they recorded a sting operation against one of the websites. The repairman showed up in a minivan ready to fix a door at the garage door business.
“I don’t know. I tell you the truth. I get a job and I come,” the driver said.
David Parsons of Greece searched for Tracey Door in Rochester two days ago. He clicked the first link and called the 585 number.
“The lady who answered the phone said they had taken over for Tracey,” Parsons said.
Berkeley: “You realize now that Tracey is not out of business. They still work.”
Parsons: “Right. We called this morning. And found all that out.”
Parsons later learned Tracey Door is still open. The mystery company charged him $1,400 for a $400 spring.
Berkeley: “So what’s the problem?”
“The problem is that it’s our reputation,” said Michelle Tracey Stundtner, owner of Tracey Door.
While Berkeley was with Hilsinger, he received two calls from the company he originally contacted. Hilsinger told them he decided to go a different route.
“If you’re looking for a service, a local service, make sure you’re dealing with a local company. An address. A local address. Not just a phone number. They can trick you,” Hilsinger said.
Hilsinger has cancelled the work with the company he called and hired a real local garage door company to fix the problem.
In May, the U.S. Attorney in Chicago filed a claim against a company it says ran hundreds of fake repair websites with thousands of fake reviews. The company is also registered in New York.
