BUFFALO, N.Y. — After three years of construction and debates over funding, the Buffalo Bills will cut the ribbon on the new Highmark Stadium on Tuesday, June 23.
The announcement comes after the team recieved received a temporary certificate of occupancy for the new stadium from Erie County. News10NBC has followed progress on the stadium for years. The first event at the new stadium will be the Blue and Red scrimmage game in August.
How much did the stadium cost?
The stadium’s cost totaled $2.1 billion, up from the initial estimate of $1.5 billion. It will have nearly 10,000 fewer seats compared to the old stadium, and a Highmark Stadium spokesperson said reducing stadium capacity is a trend across many sports.
New York State contributed $600 million, and Erie County contributed $250 million toward the upfront cost of the stadium. The NFL and the Bills were responsible for the rest. Construction began in June of 2023.
Hiring workers at the new stadium
Highmark Stadium is looking to hire hundreds of workers ahead of the Bills’ season opener, including cooks, attendants, cashiers, and catering servers.
The Kaleida Health Sports Performance Center at One Bills Drive will host a job fair on Monday, June 15. It runs from 4 to 7 p.m. The jobs are for people 18 and older. You can learn more about job openings here.
What will happen to the old Highmark Stadium?
Crews have begun slowly tearing down the old Highmark Stadium. The demolition is expected to continue through March 2027, and pieces of the stadium are for sale.
Bills Mafia members can buy everything from seats to goal posts to urinals. The company CollectibleXchange is tasked with removing and selling items from the stadium. The company will split profits from the sale 50/50 with Erie County. News10NBC spoke with a leader at CollectibleXchange about the process.
“We already sold out of goal posts, very little goal post left, the turf has been off the charts, I think we’re going to run out of seats. I know that sounds crazy but this fan base is a little crazy, there’s no stopping them,” Brandon Steiner said.
You can browse for available stadium pieces here. The Bills won’t receive any money from the sale.
