Kuldeep Yadav highlights bonding with youngsters, opens up on mentoring young India players ahead of Afghanistan Test

As one of the senior members of India’s present Test team, Kuldeep Yadav will have to take extra responsibilities on his shoulders, and he knows it very, very well.

For the one-off Test match against Afghanistan, the Indian cricket team selectors have included multiple young stars in the squad, including two emerging spinners. In the absence of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, the onus is now on Yadav to lead the spin bowling attack from the front.

A day before the Test in New Chandigarh, Kuldeep Yadav explains the importance of communication with the new entrants, and how he is doing the job before the match. Instead of guiding the emerging talents as a typical mentor, Kuldeep wants to become a partner in their journey.

“Whenever a new player joins the team, your job is to make him comfortable. You want him to see you as a partner. If he has any problem, he should feel free to talk to you, and you must be ready to support him,” Kuldeep Yadav told PTI in an exclusive interview, facilitated by JioHotstar.

“Right now, there is good bonding with two or three of the younger players. It feels good to have them around,” he added.

One of the rookies is likely to face Afghanistan in the one-off Test

Manav Suthar and Harsh Dubey are the two rookies in the squad for the one-off Test. One of them is poised to make their way into the playing eleven, along with Kuldeep Yadav. On paper, Team India is far ahead of the Afghanistan cricket team in terms of strength and experience.

Retaining most of the key batters for the match, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that they are not taking the contest lightly. To maintain the best possible balance in the team, the selectors have included some of the experienced candidates in the bowling side, along with the newbies. It is going to be a must-win match for the hosts, as the match is a part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Kuldeep Yadav, who has taken 76 wickets in 17 Tests, says that to create a strong bond with the young players, they are doing free conversations as a group. Through the conversations, the 31-year-old is trying to understand their understanding of the game, where patience matters the most, along with an individual’s skill sets.

We talk freely as a group: Kuldeep

“We talk freely as a group, especially about the conditions. If I want to test the youngsters, then I ask them questions regarding their understanding of the pitch, the weather conditions, and how the team should approach the match,” Kuldeep says ahead of the India vs Afghanistan Test.

“So, our conversations are mostly about basic tactics, what lengths to bowl, what pace works on this surface, and how spinners need to be patient in Test cricket. Patience is everything in this format,” he mentions further.
