Webster Town Board votes to pause development for six months while comprehensive plan is reviewed

WEBSTER, N.Y. — The Webster Town Board unanimously voted to enact a local law setting up a temporary (six-month) moratorium on certain types of development in the town on Thursday.

Town officials are currently reviewing and revising the town’s comprehensive plan, aiming to hold off on any significant changes while they’re reviewing the plan. They’ve had a working and a hearing on this, and sent it to the county planning board, which sent it back to the board.

It covers data centers, large-scale solar projects, anything that subdivides land into more than four parcels, and anything in the town’s commercial districts. The plan doesn’t apply to anything that has already gotten site plan or special permit approval, or to rehabbing or repairing existing structures.

The moratorium expires in six months, unless the board votes to extend it for another three months, which they can do twice.

Developers can come to the board seeking relief if they can demonstrate the moratorium “causes irreparable injury to the applicant.”
