ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We’re tracking a few things: possibility of the Northern Lights Thursday night, some weekend rain, and the return of heat & humidity next week. Starting with the Northern Lights: a fairly strong geomagnetic storm headed toward earth will likely produce the Northern Lights over the next few nights, with the greatest likelihood looking like Thursday night. These events are often very difficult to forecast, but if you’re interested, it may be worth checking out once it turns dark (after 9:30ish)! As far as the cloud cover is concerned, we’ve seen some high clouds spilling into WNY, and they will continue overnight. So, if we do see the aurora, we should still be able to see the colors, but it may not be completely clear.
Friday will be our last warm, comfortable and dry day. Temperatures will once again reach into the lower to mid 80s with a mix of clouds and sunshine, and dry weather. Dew points will begin to climb into the 50s and lower 60s, which will make it feel a little more muggy, but certainly not humid or uncomfortable.
Dew points continue to climb into Saturday with more humidity being pumped into the region. With the increased moisture comes the return of some showers and storms. Some scattered showers will arrive in the morning ahead of a cold front. The front itself will arrive in the afternoon with a better chance for a few thunderstorms. Strong to severe storms aren’t expected, so we’ll stay “green” on the Threat Tracker, but we’ll monitor that storm threat. Sunday should be mainly dry, with just the slight chance of a shower with any leftover moisture. In all, the weekend will be far from a washout, but we will have to dodge some raindrops and avoid a few storms.
Next week starts off comfortable, but heat and humidity look to make a return as the week goes on. Air temperatures will likely climb back through the 80s once again, and dew points will begin to climb through the 60s by the middle of next week. So a more typical “summer sizzle” will arrive in Rochester and the Finger Lakes region next week and into next weekend.
