Foreign Minister: Educational cooperation key pillar of strategic partnership with Japan

Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, on Thursday, June 4, 2026, affirmed that educational cooperation is the main pillar of the strategic partnership between Egypt and Japan, with strong attention and support from the political leadership in both countries.

The foreign minister made the remarks during a meeting with Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Yohei Matsumoto, on the fringe of his current official visit to Japan.

Adelatty hailed the distinguished educational partnership between Egypt and Japan, exemplified by the “Egyptian-Japanese Education Initiative” launched in 2016, which has made tangible contributions to the development of Egypt’s education system across various levels.

He praised Japan’s Education Minister’s January 2026 visit to Egypt, his first overseas trip since assuming office, highlighting the importance Japan places on educational collaboration with Egypt.

The top Egyptian diplomat expressed hope of building on the success of the Egyptian-Japanese Schools project and expanding the number of targeted schools in the coming years, thereby enhancing the benefits of Japan’s distinguished educational model.

He further commended the successful establishment of the first Egyptian-Japanese Advanced Technical Education Institute in September 2025, as well as the Egyptian-Japanese University for Science, Technology, Research, and Innovation. He emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in technical and technological education, which would directly help prepare qualified Egyptian professionals to meet labor market needs and support the country’s developmental and economic priorities.

Abdelatty underscored the significance of joint Egyptian-Japanese scholarships offered to African students under the “TICAD” framework, noting their role in training African professionals.

He expressed hope that the Egyptian-Japanese University for Science and Technology would host more African students, supporting the implementation of outcomes from the ninth TICAD summit related to human capacity development in Africa.

Abdelatty further underlined Egypt’s preparedness to cooperate with Japan in transferring Japanese educational expertise to African countries, based on the successful experience of applying it in Egypt through trilateral cooperation frameworks involving both countries and African nations.
