Thousands of mostly religious conservatives have gathered at the Imam Khomeini shrine in the south of Tehran on Thursday morning to commemorate the death of the Islamic Republic’s founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, 37 years ago, while also calling for revenge against the United States for the ongoing war.

Some of those attending waved red flags with the word “revenge” written on them, while others carried pictures Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei –– Khomeini’s successor –– who was killed in an airstrike on February 28, when the US-Israeli war with Iran began.
People at the shrine that CNN spoke to Thursday morning said they were skeptical of current efforts to broker a peace agreement with the US and instead wanted their leadership to exact revenge for Khamenei’s killing.
