’80s Hardcore Punk Band Releases First Song in Six Years

The Cro-Mags have released their first new song in six years, marking a major return for one of hardcore punk's most influential bands.

The New York hardcore veterans premiered “Wired For Chaos,” a track that arrives alongside an official music video directed by Rex Miller, exclusively on Rolling Stone.

The song shares its title with the 2024 documentary centered on Cro-Mags founder, vocalist and bassist Harley Flanagan. The release also comes after the band signed with BLKIIBLK, the heavy metal imprint of Frontiers Label Group. A new full-length album is currently targeted for release in 2027.

Speaking about the track, Flanagan described its sound and structure in detail.

“It comes in with an aggressive metal intro befitting a UFC walk-in or a video game, then bursts into a more traditional HC thrash vibe before returning to a heavy beatdown at the end in an unmistakable Cro-Mags style,” he said, according to Lamb Goat.

The song explores deeply personal themes tied to Flanagan's life experiences.

“The song is literally about being programmed and wired for chaos from birth, not just by environment, but by parents, trauma, childhood experiences, and the resulting PTSD that I personally struggle with as a result.”

Cro-Mags’ New Song Signals Next Era

“Wired For Chaos” is the band's first new original song since the release cycle surrounding their 2020 album In The Beginning. The latest track continues the aggressive blend of hardcore punk and thrash metal that helped establish the Cro-Mags as one of New York City's defining heavy music acts.

The band has played a significant role in the development of hardcore music since emerging from New York's underground scene in the early 1980s. Their influence has extended beyond hardcore punk, helping shape crossover thrash and other alternative heavy music styles.

Earlier this year, Flanagan revealed that work was underway on the band's next studio album. The project reportedly involves drummer Greyson Nekrutman and producer Arthur Rizk, who has previously worked with several notable metal acts.

The upcoming record will follow In The Beginning, which was released in June 2020. Prior to that album, the group issued the Don't Give In EP in August 2019 and the From The Grave EP in December of the same year.

The newly released music video for “Wired For Chaos” highlights footage captured during recent Cro-Mags performances. According to Flanagan, the video reflects the broad audience that has supported the band throughout its history.

The release of “Wired For Chaos” arrives during a busy period for the band and Flanagan personally. The documentary Harley Flanagan: Wired For Chaos, which chronicles his turbulent life and survival story, reached theaters in June 2025.

Earlier this year, the Cro-Mags also shared a newly recorded version of their classic song “Hard Times” to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their landmark debut album The Age Of Quarrel.

With a new label partnership, a fresh single and a full-length album planned for 2027, the Cro-Mags are once again adding new music to a legacy that has stretched across more than four decades.
