A.J. Brown practiced with the New England Patriots for the first time today. Brown also spoke to reporters and didn’t hide his excitement, saying, “I know this ain’t heaven, but it’s close to it.”
The veteran wide receiver grew up a Patriots fan and is reunited with Mike Vrabel, who coached him during his first seasons in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans before he was traded to Philadelphia. So, it’s easy to see why he was so happy on his first day in Foxboro.
But, a report today by Philadelphia Inquirer Eagles beat reporter Jeff McLane shed some light on another team that was interested in acquiring Brown’s services: the Los Angeles Rams. According to McLane, the Rams were involved in trade talks with the Eagles regarding Brown, but backed off after reviewing his medicals.
“They had gotten medicals. They weren’t satisfied with what they saw, and that was sort of why they backed out,” McLane said on unCovering the Birds. “So that explains why Brown’s value on the market—partly, I think, explains why his value—wasn’t what you thought it would be.”

Brown missed only six games to injuries during his first three seasons with the Titans, and another six over the past two seasons with the Eagles. He’s also only 28 years old, so the bad medical report seems a little odd.
What’s more interesting is that if the Rams had continued to pursue Brown in a trade with the Eagles, they might not have had the draft capital it took to land star pass rusher Myles Garrett on Monday. The Rams sent Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for Garrett on Monday.
New England sent a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Eagles for Brown. So, technically, Los Angeles could have done both deals for the grand price of first-rounders in back-to-back seasons, a 2027 fifth, and 2029 third, and Jared Verse.
Regardless, one thing is clear: the Rams know that Matthew Stafford’s clock is ticking, and they’re going all-in on another run at a Super Bowl while he’s still playing.
