Chilean Backstroker Edhy Vargas has announced his commitment to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as a member of the Rebels 2026 recruiting class.
Vargas was featured in the ‘Best of the Rest’ section in SwimSwam’s Ranking of the top recruits in the boys’ high school class of 2026.
Vargas wrote the following regarding his commitment.
I’m thrilled and incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to pursue my academic and athletic career at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV)! I am immensely grateful to the UNLV coaching staff for providing me with this amazing opportunity to swim with such an incredible team, and for making this entire recruiting process a comfortable and positive experience. A huge and heartfelt thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, friends, and all the people who have supported and guided me unconditionally throughout this ongoing journey. GO REBELS!
Vargas, a native of Santiago, Chile, represents Asphalt Green Aquatics stateside in New York. He raced at the 2025 Speedo Sectionals in Ithaca (SCY), where he won the 200 back in 1:44.19. He also finished 2nd in the 100 back (48.65) and 3rd in the 200 freestyle (1:36.86). At that same meet, he also notched best times in the 100 fly (49.84) and the 50 free (21.54).
In November, Vargas raced at the Bolivarian Games, where he clocked best long-course backstroke times of 55.92 in the 100 back and 2:00.50 in the 200 back. This past January, he also clocked his fastest 100 free and 200 free at the National Summer Categories Championships in 53.02 and 1:54.46, respectively.

100 Back: 48.55 200 Back: 1:44.19 200 Free: 1:36.86 100 Fly: 49.84Vargas joins a UNLV men’s team that finished 2nd at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming and Diving Championships this past season.
Based on his best short course times, he would have finished 4th in the 200 back, 5th in the 200 free, and 8th in the 100 back.
Vargas is an immediate x-factor at UNLV, with highly competitive times right away, and with limited yards racing under his belt, his ceiling is still high, and with college coaching, he could be making potential NCAA Championship pushes.
He joins fellow South American swimmer Emil Perez (Venezuela), who just wrapped up his redshirt-sophomore season with the Rebels.
His range could also see him involved in some butterfly work, and with very strong 200 times, the 200 fly, which he has yet to race in yards, could be a potentially solid event for him.
Vargas joins Tyler Ortiz as the lone publicized recruits in the UNLV 2026 recruiting class.
