Marilyn Monroe’s Love Letters, Personal Items Hit Auction at a Staggering Price on 100th Birthday

In honor of Marilyn Monroe’s 100th birthday on June 1, a new collection of memorabilia has gone up for auction through Heritage Auctions. From heartfelt love letters written by Arthur Miller to Monroe’s Christian Dior skirt that she wore on her honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio, all this and more went up on June 1.

The star’s Dior skirt was sold the day it was listed, with a starting bid of $20,000. The two-piece skirt suit was from Monroe’s personal wardrobe, and she was photographed in it on January 29, 1954, as she and DiMaggio departed from San Francisco to Japan.

Other items include Monroe’s hairpin, which is still up for auction at a current bid of $1,050. Heritage Auctions said that the pin comes from an auction of Monroe’s estate in 1999, which included “personal clothing and accessories.”

Among several letters is one from Monroe’s ex-husband, Miller. Written on May 9, 1956, just over one month before the two wed, the letter’s current bid is set for $1,000. In it, Miller confesses his deep love for Monroe.

“Pish, I love you,” Miller wrote. “I think I have loved you all my life. Please don't marry Henry or George Sanders or George Washington. What have they got, money? Marry me and I will write you poems and kiss you every few minutes, and love your every footstep. How you gladden my heart! Oh, it was good to have been born.”

Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson, tragically died at the age of 36 in 1962. Struggling with endometriosis, addiction and mental health, Monroe died from an overdose of barbiturates, as her death was ruled a suicide.

In a Vanity FairInstagram post reporting on the auction, some users were excited about the memorabilia, while others commented on the tragedy of it.

“Really the most tragic is that even in death Marilyn is not only exploited but owned by a conglomerate capitalizing off her hard work and every ounce of who she was,” one user said.

Another said that Monroe “is still being exploited in her death."
