England are not on the same page as the ICC on the decision to start trials for swapping between a red ball and a pink ball during an ongoing Test match starting from this international summer.
England and the England and Wales Cricket Board have always been against the ICC's plans to increase the use of the pink ball in the longest format of the game. The traditionality of the red ball Tests is what they have been prioritizing even in this modern decade.
England has, however, always had a modernized approach towards Test cricket, as they have never faded away from playing the attacking brand of cricket. But England's record in pink ball Tests might be one of the central reasons for the ECB not agreeing to this arrangement.
The ICC has promoted the use of pink balls in order to resolve the visibility issues that happen at the end of a day's play during a Test match. However, for any such amendment to be confirmed, all full member nations should agree to the plans.
In this case, a detailed set of rules has to be set on the possible framework under which altering these conditions would be permitted. The interchange between the red and the pink balls has to be limited under a set of rules, and it would not be under the discretion of the batting or bowling sides.
Using the pink ball would be a careful approach towards maximising the time of play, as it would slightly transform traditional Test matches into a day-night affair when match officials deem it unsuitable to continue with the red one under dim light.
England, however, has shown no interest in using pink balls in Test cricket, atleast least this summer, despite the ICC promoting the trial, which also seems a feasible way out to reduce the time lost due to bad light.
England vs New Zealand home series to not include ICC's pink-ball trials
Though the ICC has already discussed the plans, they have yet to provide a date stamp for their introduction, as it is yet to be written into the playing conditions. Hence, the ECB does not have to consider the option for the upcoming series against New Zealand, which marks the start of the international summer for them.
According to Daily Mail Sport reports, the entire New Zealand home series for England comes way too early before any measure could be taken by the ICC with the support of all the full member nations.
However, despite approval at some point, this remains a concern that the rule will come into play only when both parties in a Test match agree to the arrangement before the start of any game. England have not agreed to a floodlit game since playing their first.
The ECB have always stood firmly against the pink ball in Test cricket
The last time England played a pink ball Test on home soil dates back to 2017, when they hosted the West Indies at Edgbaston in 2017. As of now, Daily Mail Sport reports had claimed earlier this year that the ECB had not agreed to a pink ball Ashes Test in 2029-30.
New Zealanders are the first international tourists at the start of the English summer, and after this series, the ECB awaits the Asian giants, Pakistan, for a Test series, which runs between the 19th of August and the 13th of September.
The England vs New Zealand first Test begins on Thursday, the 4th of June and the series continues with the third Test ending on the 29th of June. England will then switch to a white-ball series against India.
