A 38-year-old man has died after he was shot by an Oak Park police officer during an altercation on Sunday night.
According to the Oak Park Police Department, the man was pulled over by a police officer near Harrison Street and Austin Boulevard just after 9 p.m. Sunday.
During the traffic stop, the driver was instructed to exit the vehicle, and during a subsequent pat down the officer discovered a firearm on his person, according to a police press release.
At that point, a “prolonged physical struggle” over the weapon began according to police, and ultimately the driver was able to gain possession of the firearm, the statement said.
It was at that time the officer fired multiple shots at the man, striking him at least four times according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The officer then administered first aid, but the driver later died at an area hospital.
According to police, a firearm was recovered at the scene. The officer involved was hospitalized and was released on Monday morning.
In accordance with department policy, the Illinois State Police are assisting with the investigation into the use-of-force incident.
