The iconic HBO series Euphoria came to an end with the epic Season 3 finale. And at the screening of the finale on Sunday, May 31, creator Sam Levinson paid tribute to Angus Cloud, who passed away at the age of 25 in 2023 from an accidental overdose.
Cloud played drug dealer Fezco, and despite his death before the filming of the final season, he remained a presence in the show with his character Fez serving a 30-year prison sentence. He was brought up in many conversations throughout, despite not appearing physically on screen.
“Moments like these are rare. This season we lost Angus. Many of you loved him the way I did. He deserved more time, a longer, fuller life," Levinson said at the screening. “But he was taken, like far too many people in this country, by fentanyl.”
The finale had Zendaya’s character, Rue Bennett, dying of an accidental overdose, which divided fans, who were hopeful for a happier ending. However, Levinson said that this was the most “honest ending” as “people like Rue don’t make it.”
“There’s no reason to sugarcoat it," he added. "I wanted to tell this story for Angus and for people who weren’t granted a second chance.”
While she was dying, the scene included a show of Rue and Fez together, which Levinson said was a scene that "never made it into the show."
“I thought, oh, it’d be great to use that footage and just see him again—and see the two of them," the show creator explained. "I really wanted to dive into that this season and deal with fentanyl, and deal with the consequences and how it’s taking away young people’s opportunity for a second chance. When I was growing up and doing drugs, sure, you could O.D. on something, but it wasn’t like it is today where you make one wrong move and you’re dead.”
