After his IPL 2026 heroics, there has been growing demand for "boy wonder" Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be included in the Indian team. Many greats of the game have said that the 15-year-old could do wonders on the international stage as well.
Now, the BCCI has put out a definitive statement in support of Sooryavanshi and his future in Indian cricket. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia spoke to reporters after the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their second IPL title in a row by registering a five-wicket win against the Gujarat Titans in the final.
Although the season belonged to RCB as a team, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi walked away with more individual honours than his 15-year-old shoulders are arguably designed to carry.
In this tournament, Sooryavanshi made 776 runs at a strike rate of 237 and hit 72 sixes. He also had 5 fifties and a century, including being dismissed in the 90s thrice.
At the end of the season, Sooryavanshi had the most runs (Orange Cap), most sixes (Super Sixes of the Season Award), and the best strike rate (Super Striker of the Season Award) of any batter in the competition.
He also won the IPL's official Most Valuable Player Award. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ended IPL 2026 as the youngest player to ever win the Orange Cap.
His 72 sixes were the most by a batter in a single T20 tournament, and he became the first player to score 600 or more runs at a strike rate over 200 in a T20 tournament.
"He has a bright future" - Devajit Saikia
After the IPL final, Saikia said that the BCCI would do everything to ensure that Sooryavanshi had a successful career at the highest level.
The teen sensation came one step closer to a national debut after being selected in India A's squad for the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka in June.
"It was a wonderful season... I hope all the fans have a lovely time during this IPL, and congratulations to RCB for winning the tournament consecutively twice. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is a wonderful player coming up, and he has a bright future. BCCI will do everything to get him to the highest level of cricket," Saikia said.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's cricket career
Outside his IPL 2026 exploits, Sooryavanshi had a fruitful career at the Under-19 level, which culminated in him being crowned an Under-19 World Cup winner earlier this year.
He finished as the second-highest run-scorer of that tournament, including making 175 in the final from just 80 balls against England.
In September 2024, he made the second-fastest century of all time in Youth Tests at just 13 years old with a 58-ball century against Australia.
In December 2025, he made a 36-ball century against Arunachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. On that day, he went on to make the fastest 150 in List-A history by getting to the milestone in 59 balls, and eventually ended with 190 runs off just 84 balls.
Sooryavanshi also holds the record for the second- and third-fastest centuries in IPL history, and came very close to taking the top spot during his 97 runs from 29 balls against SRH in the Eliminator this year.
