Littwin: Victor Marx’s interview with Kyle Clark likely to win him MAGA votes

I guess there isn’t an official Colorado GOP self-destruction watch — even though there should be. But on the unofficial Littwin Watch, the party’s risk factor has been upgraded from “red alert” to the rarely utilized “off the bleeping charts.”

Which is what happens when the party’s apparent leader in the governor’s primary race — Victor Marx — shows himself to be even weirder than one of his two opponents — state Rep. Scott Bottoms, who insists the legislature and governor’s office are at the center of a pedophile ring.

As columnist Krista Kafer suggested in the Denver Post, while there are a number of pizzerias in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, there is no evidence of Democratic legislators sharing a slice with kids not their own.

How can Marx compete with that on the craziness scale? Or, say, Bottoms’ evidence-free, but Trumpian claim that 45,000 to 50,000 members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua have taken over Colorado? By the way, whatever happened to Donald Trump’s Operation Aurora? Did ICE’s jackbooted thugs get too bogged down on the streets of Minneapolis?

If you want to know how Marx can top Bottoms, just watch 9News anchor Kyle Clark’s recent 30-minute interview with Marx. It’s a master class in confronting a candidate with his series of lies, damned lies and the kind of sordid embellishments that would turn a politician’s face orange.

I guess we’ll start where Clark did, with a claim on Marx’s website — since taken down — that the missionary organization he leads, All Things Possible Ministries, had rescued 45,000 women and children from, presumably, human trafficking.

Marx conceded that citing the number was a campaign foulup, but then Clark asked him how many women and children he had, in fact, rescued. Marx refused to answer for security reasons, claiming that revealing the number would jeopardize those doing the rescuing and those who were rescued.

When pressed, Marx finally said it was “more than one and less than a bunch.”

    Got it?

    Clark kept pressing.

Marx claims his group rescued 43 children during Operation Northern Lights in Florida. But when Clark pointed out that when the U.S. Marshals listed 25 partner agencies in the operation that Marx’s ministry was not among them, Marx eventually conceded that his group had provided financial support. Which is not exactly the same as conducting a Kevlar-suited rescue raid.

    You want more? Clark did.

He asked about Marx’s claim that he had performed “more than 130 missions,” in 30 countries rescuing women and children. Marx denied ever saying that — “it doesn’t sound like me” — until Clark read him Marx’s tweeted 2024 quote.

When Clark asked Marx to name some of the countries he was involved in — which you think would be a softball question — he came up with, uh, um, uh, zero, before saying he didn’t memorize that stuff.

“I have no need to prove to anyone what we’ve done over the last many years because we know what we’ve done,” Marx said. “People believing it or not? It has no bearing on our work.”

Here’s what you can believe — or not.

That his stepfather made him kill a man in rural Mississippi when he was 7 years old. It’s a tragedy if it happened, but no one seems to have been able to find a record of an unsolved murder at that time and place. If it didn’t happen, it might as well be a Johnny Cash song. (When Clark asked Marx how many people he has killed as an adult — Marx has often made the claim that people died in his work as a “high risk missionary” — he answered, “Does it matter?” Clark said he thought it did.) That Marx, a retired Marine, called in an airstrike that killed 70 ISIS fighters. He made the call, he said, as a civilian. That Marx, as a minister, does exorcisms, ridding people of demons. It works so well, he says, that can do them on the phone. And while he never charges for an exorcism, he does sell a $99 guidebook to exorcisms on his website. It is true that Marx conducts exorcisms. It’s also true that Clark asked Marx if he wonders why some people think he’s a “con man.” He said he didn’t. That Marx has any business being a candidate besides his ability, shown over the years with his ministry, to raise large amounts of money. Marx has far outraised Bottoms and the third candidate, state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, who has been supported by most of what’s left of the Colorado Republican establishment. You can imagine how much that helps.

Kirkmeyer is running in the lone semi-sane lane of this primary. Her hope is that Marx and Bottoms will divide the crazy vote, which is almost certain to be a majority in her party, and that she can slip through.

Still, Kirkmeyer, a conservative but one who has been spotted talking to Democrats, not only has to defend her time in the legislature — she serves on the Joint Budget Committee — but also her criticism of Jared Polis for commuting the 9-year sentence of election grifter and MAGA martyr Tina Peters.

If failing to properly celebrate Peters’ release next week is not seen as heretical in MAGA world, I don’t know what is. It certainly can’t help Kirkmeyer with her slow-moving fundraising campaign.

As for Bottoms, I don’t know how much pedophile charges help these days when it’s Trump and his wholly owned Department of Justice that have been dragging their collective feet in releasing the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Still, someone has to win, even though the winner — note, I didn’t say victor — will be a huge underdog come November to the winner of the Democratic primary between Michael Bennet and Phil Weiser. There has been only one Republican governor in the state over the last 50 years, and Trump, meanwhile, has lost all three presidential races here.

In a normal world — meaning not the one we’re currently living in — Marx would be, uh, toast after the normally devastating Clark interview, and not the kind served with avocado.

But from what I understand of Republican politics these days, offering lies, damned lies and more lies are the way to win MAGA hearts. Look at how the uber-corrupt Ken Paxton ran away with his primary race in Texas against veteran U.S. Senator John Cornyn. There’s a longstanding trend here.

So, it won’t surprise you that Marx posted on Facebook his reaction to the Clark interview, telling voters that he welcomed Clark’s “hard” questions, including whether he’d show up for the next televised debate, which will be shown Tuesday on 9News. Marx said it was a “great” interview and that he thinks he “crushed it.”

Here’s the thing: I’m willing to bet a lot of GOP voters — not that many will watch the entire interview — will think he crushed it, too.
