Hundreds of young people laced up for peace on Saturday in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood as part of the La Correra Por Paz 5K.
The day was all about taking a step for peace or rather, several thousand steps.
“It’s a good way for the community to come together and do something good, and it gets people out there,” said Mauricio Galvan, who finished in first place.
The sixth annual Race for Peace 5K in La Villita Park raises awareness and money to stop violence in Chicago. While specifically geared toward young people, runners of all ages participated.
Some ran with groups, such as Students Run Chicago, a nonprofit that recruits students from around the city.
“I saw that they give out like free races, free gear, and you’re able to build a community within,” 17-year-old Diego Magallanes said.
The group brought about 100 students to the race.
“Some kids are going to train with us all summer,” Barney Rupp with Students Run Chicago explained. “We meet every Saturday morning on the lakefront. Some of these kids will actually end up running the Chicago Marathon in October.”
After a Memorial Day weekend marked by multiple large teen gatherings in Chicago, including at least one that turned violent, Saturday morning’s event focused on community and wellness.
It also celebrated culture.
As runners made their way in loops around the park, the Little Village Chamber of Commerce hosted a health fair set up with tents and community resources.
“It’s a perfect time for families to come and learn more about health for their kids and their families in addition to running for their personal health,” said Len Dominguez, founder of Race for Peace.
The Little Village Rotary Club raised thousands of dollars – money organizers say goes back into neighborhood-level programs, most geared toward youth development.
Edgar Herrera has run the 5K for the past few years. This time, he had a very special running partner: his daughter.
“You’ve got to build these strong habits so when they grow up, it’s nothing. Something that have to do, they want to do it,” he said.
