Brought to you by Spectrum Aquatics, a SwimSwam partner, our Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series celebrates swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.
Jasper Ye, 12, Aquazot Swim Club (CA): Ye set best times in everything he swam at the Speedo Grand Challenge last weekend, cracking the top 30 all-time in the boys’ 11-12 age group in one event and ranking 1st this season in two. In the 200 IM, Ye clocked 2:19.34 in the final, improving on his previous best of 2:22.93 to rank 30th all-time in the boys’ 11-12 age group and 1st this season. He also moved to the top spot in the seasonal rankings in the 50 back (30.27), and also claims 2nd in the 100 back (1:05.49) and 3rd in the 50 free (26.89), 100 free (58.78) and 100 fly (1:04.34).
Michelle Zhang, 12, Aquazot Swim Club (CA): Also competing at the Speedo Grand Challenge, Ye’s Aquazot teammate Zhang went six-for-six in personal best times, highlighted by her breaststroke performances. She claimed gold in the girls’ 12& under 50 breast in a time of 35.63, ranking her 2nd in the girls’ 11-12 age group this season. Zhang also moved to 2nd in the age group this season with her PB of 1:18.78 in the 100 breast. She also set best times in the 50 free (30.30), 100 free (1:05.84), 200 breast (2:56.49) and 200 IM (2:42.02).
Ella Legg, 14, Pleasanton Seahawks (PC): Legg gained some valuable experience competing at the Pro Swim Series stop in Sacramento last weekend, racing the 1500 free in a rare prelims-finals format and navigating three rounds of the 200 fly, including semi-finals. In the 1500 free, Legg dropped nearly 40 seconds off her best time in the prelims, clocking 17:32.40, and then in the final, she got down to 17:24.82, ranking her 3rd this season in the 13-14 age group. In the 200 fly, Legg built her way through the three rounds masterfully, breaking 2:20 for the first time in the prelims in 2:18.06, resetting her best time to 2:16.94 in the semis, and then landing a 4th-place finish in the final with another best time of 2:15.82. That swim ranks her 74th all-time in the 13-14 age group and 1st this season. She also set a PB in the 800 free (9:15.18), ranking her 14th in the age group this season.
Ethan Reines, 14, Scarlet Aquatics (NJ): Reines knocked more than seven seconds off his personal best time in the 800 free at the Scarlet Memorial Day meet last weekend in Piscataway, N.J., clocking 8:23.11 to climb into 30th all-time in the boys’ 13-14 age group. He set his previous best of 8:30.27 at the Speedo Sectionals in Indianapolis in March, which ranked him 98th all-time. Last weekend, he also clocked 4:03.80 in the 400 free, just shy of the PB he set at the Sectional meet of 4:03.05, which ranks him 31st all-time in the 13-14 age group. He also recorded a best time last weekend in the 100 free, posting a time of 55.51.
Madison McLaughlin, 10, Tennessee Aquatics (SE): McLaughlin set six new personal best times and swam the 400 free for the first time in long course meters at the NAC May Classic two weeks ago in Nashville. Headlining McLaughlin’s performances was what she did in the sprint free events, firing off lifetime bests of 30.48 in the 50 free and 1:07.64 in the 100 free that rank 3rd and 4th this season in the girls’ 10 & under age group, respectively. She also cracked the top 20 this season in the 100 fly (1:18.21) and 100 back (1:20.26), ranking 14th and 18th this season in the age group, respectively, and added additional PBs in the 200 free (2:36.27), 500 free (5:44.91) and 50 back (37.42).
