Rishabh Pant to stay at LSG despite quitting captaincy: Report

Rishabh Pant has stepped down from the captaincy role as the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) sustains another setback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. In the 2026 season, they finished their campaign at the bottom-most position in the points table.

On May 29, the franchise informed that Rishabh Pant had wished to put down the leadership role, and the team management accepted that as well. As the keeper-batter is no longer the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, there are speculations around his career with the franchise.

Some have started to believe that Rishabh Pant’s journey with the Lucknow Super Giants has come to an end. However, there is no official announcement regarding that. The franchise informed only about his resignation from the captaincy duty.

According to a journalist, the star keeper-batter is all set to continue with the team in the upcoming season as well. As Pant is no longer the leader of the troop, the franchise will have to elect a new skipper ahead of IPL 2026. Mitchell Marsh could be the next captain of LSG, who played some brilliant knocks in the 2026 season.

    Pant to leave the franchise?

“Rishabh Pant is not going anywhere. He is part of the LSG setup. All News related to his transfer is false. Mitchell Marsh will be the new captain of LSG,” Ravish Bisht, a journalist, claims on his social media post on May 11.

LSG brought Pant for INR 27 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 season and assigned him as the leader of the team, replacing KL Rahul. In both seasons, neither the captain himself nor the team was able to perform according to their true potential. As a result, in consecutive seasons, Lucknow missed the play-off spots.

In the 2025 season, the southpaw secured 269 runs in 13 innings for an average of 24.45 despite registering a century and a half-century. In the following season, Rishabh Pant’s batting average was 28.36 after performing in 13 innings.

    Tom Moody advises a 'reset'

LSG's director of cricket, Tom Moody, felt that it was the right call by the 28-year-old to step down from the captaincy role, as the team needed to do something significant after suffering back-to-back setbacks.

“The last couple of years have been difficult for him. He hasn't reached the heights he would've expected for himself. It's the right decision - certainly the right decision for him, it's the right decision for the franchise. Let's hope this is the corner he turns that enables him to play the brand of cricket we recognise alongside him,” Tom Moodey mentioned in his official statement.

For the betterment of the team, he also previously said that the franchise needs to reset the leadership roles. According to ESPNCricinfo, Rishabh Pant’s future in the team will be decided after a full season review.

“As for Pant's future at LSG, Moody said that was an "obvious question", but one whose answer would only be possible after a full season review,” according to the media report.
