Gujarat Titans (GT) knew it very well that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the main powerhouse in the Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) batting unit. So, from the beginning of the innings, they took a completely new approach against the 15-year-old batter.
To stop the batter from scoring runs flawlessly, the GT pacers choose to deliver through the batter's body line of the batter. It worked. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose average strike rate in the IPL 2026 season was over 230, needed 30-odd balls to complete the half-century, which was the slowest in terms of his batting approach.
In the 14th over of the innings, a bouncer off Kagiso Rabada hit Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s helmet. A blow on the helmet is always one of the scariest parts in the game; additionally, Vaibhav is only 15. Former Team India all-rounder, Irfan Pathan, says he feels that a body line strategy against the teenage batter looked not nice to him, as he is also a father.
The pitch in Mullanpur provided the pacers with extra bounce in the first innings. Pacers of GT, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, and Jason Holder utilized the nature of the surface as much as possible. As the match progressed, Sooryavanshi, as soon as he got accustomed to the bounce, started to play his natural style of batting. In the 15th over, when Siraj guided a bouncer, the RR spurthpaw reliped with a maximum.

Irfan Pathan is not happy with GT's bowling against the 15-year-old batter
“Body line bowling to stop 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi doesn’t fit well with me. I know he is playing against the big boys, but the father in me doesn’t agree with that,’ Irfan Pathan shared the post on ‘X’ during the match.

— Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) May 29, 2026Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ended his brilliant spell of batting with an entertaining 96 runs from 47 balls. The surreal innings was decorated with eight 4s and seven 6s, and a strike rate of 204.26. Batting first, with the help of the 15-year-old, the Rajasthan Royals secured a total of 214 runs in 20 overs.
The total was good, especially when the pitch had something to offer to the bowlers. RR’s efforts went in vain as the Gujarat Titans surpassed the target with ease, thanks to the 104-run knock by Shubman Gill.
Kagiso Rabada explained their bowling tactics
After the first innings, GT pacer Kagiso Rabada was asked to describe their bowling strategy against the Royals. Rabada stated that the pitch helped them with the tennis ball bounce, and they reacted according to that.
“It's got a tennis ball bounce. Trying to hang as much as possible in and around that area, and then adjust accordingly. That's always key, bowling is about line and length. The more you miss your line and length, the more you decrease your chance of getting a wicket. So that's what I tried to do. That's what we tried to do on this wicket. See what it offers, and then adjust accordingly and use your instincts as you go along,” Kagiso Rabada said.
