A storied part of Six Flags Great America’s history is soaring back to life.
The suburban Gurnee amusement park announced its massive dual-track wooden coaster, American Eagle, will race for the first time in nearly a decade during its 50th Anniversary Celebration this summer.
First opened in 1981, the iconic ride became an early hit, thanks to its side-by-side racing experience that creates a sense of competition and excitement among riders.
“American Eagle has been a classic of Six Flags Great America for more than four decades,” John Krajnak, park president of Six Flags Great America, said in a news release. “Bringing back racing is a meaningful way to celebrate the nostalgia guests remember while delivering the kind of thrilling, shared experience that defines our park today.”
The park said American Eagle remains the tallest, fastest and longest racing wooden roller coaster in the world. An exact reopening date for the coaster hasn’t been announced, though the park said it will be part of the anniversary celebration from June 20 through Aug. 9.
As part of its milestone anniversary, Six Flags is planning an array of festivities, featuring new experiences, nostalgic touches and extended hours until 10 p.m. each night.
