The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred at 5:00 a.m. Wednesday which resulted in one death and one injury. Investigators are prepared to charge Ricky Adkins, a 36 year-old resident of Tuscaloosa County, with manslaughter in the death of his sister during the shooting.
In a statement issued to the press, TVCU Capt. Marty Sellers said deputies of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve Adkins on several warrants, including one for a felony. The deputies found Adkins in a tent behind his residence in Vance, Alabama.
Sellers said that Adkins’ sister, Christie Lynn Adkins, attempted to conceal her brother’s identity before Ricky Adkins aimed what appeared to be a handgun at the deputies over his sister’s shoulder. Although the TCVU later determined that the weapon was a BB gun, Sellers said that it was “indistinguishable from a functioning handgun.”
Deputies responded to seeing the weapon by firing their department-issued weapons, hitting Ricky Adkins with multiple bullets and fatally wounding Christie Lynn Adkins. Sellers did not say whether Adkins fired the BB gun during the exchange.
Ricky Adkins is currently being treated in a local hospital for life-threatening injuries.
“Mr. Adkins created the circumstances that led to Ms. Adkins’ death,” Sellers said. “Adkins will be charged on his release from medical treatment.”
