70s Rock Band Announces Special Guest for 60th Anniversary Tour

As the end of an era approaches, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has revealed the first special guest set to help celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The legendary country-rock group announced via Instagram that acclaimed banjo player Alison Brown will join the band for the final show of its All The Good Times: The Farewell Tour.

“Just announced: Alison Brown will be joining Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in Denver for the last show of the 'All The Good Times: The Farewell Tour' on June 18th," the band wrote. "Stay tuned for more special guest announcements for this show!"

The Denver concert is expected to be a particularly emotional night for fans, as it serves as the final stop of the group's farewell tour and a celebration of a career that has spanned six decades.

Formed in California in 1966, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band became one of the most influential acts in country rock, helping bridge the gap between country, folk, bluegrass and rock music. The group is perhaps best known for hits including "Mr. Bojangles," "Fishin' in the Dark" and "An American Dream."

"We started off mostly doing rock and roll back in the '70s," singer Jeff Hanna told Holler. "The first time we got any real serious airplay was in '67, but in 1970, when the album Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy came out, 'Mr. Bojangles' and a couple of other songs charted on the pop charts."

The band also played a pivotal role in country music history through its landmark Will the Circle Be Unbroken project, which brought together country legends and younger musicians in a groundbreaking collaboration that remains highly influential today.

"If there's a place that we gravitate more certainly, I think it's going to be more towards Americana than mainstream country music," said Hanna. "Nevertheless, we’re grateful for anybody that loves our music, and if they got there because of 'Fishing In the Dark' from the '80s, or from 'Bojangles' in the '70s, or from Will the Circle be Unbroken, which spanned all the generations, that's great. But if we had to pick one of those genres, Americana would definitely be the one because I think that best describes what we do."

Brown's appearance feels especially fitting given her deep roots in bluegrass and acoustic music. A Grammy-winning musician, producer and songwriter, she has become one of the most respected banjo players of her generation.

The band's announcement also hints that additional guest performers may be revealed in the coming weeks as the farewell tour approaches its conclusion.

For longtime fans, the Denver show promises to be more than just another concert; it will serve as a celebration of one of the most enduring and influential bands in American roots music.

After 60 years on the road, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band appears determined to make sure its final curtain call is a memorable one.
