MI to trade Hardik Pandya for Shivam Dube & Ayush Mhatre from CSK?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is on the verge of conclusion with only two games to go, including the final. With three teams now in the race to lift the title this season, Mumbai Indians (MI), who were amongst the firsts to bow out of the competition, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are back in news. While both teams having been struggling lately in the tournament, the two franchises hogged limelight after news of Hardik Pandya’s fate as MI captain surfaced. The Indian all-rounder, who has been leading MI since IPL 2024, is likely to be sacked as their skipper following a series of dismal results in the tournament.

While these reports are rife, there are also reports of him looking to move to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It is to be noted CSK too weren’t able to qualify for the playoffs as they failed to perform as a unit. The Yellow Army, who were without their key figure MS Dhoni this season, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy also came under scanner.

It is being reported that Hardik Pandya could move to Chennai and could takeover the captaincy reins. Although there hasn’t been any official statement on this move, but former India and CSK player S. Badrinath is in support of the trade of Pandya for Shivam Due and Ayush Mhatre – both of whom hail from Mumbai.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath said, “If I am MI, I would trade Hardik for Shivam Dube and Ayush Mhatre from CSK. A core trio of Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Hardik Pandya will take the CSK brand to a different level.”

“If Hardik demands, I would make him CSK’s captain”

The 45-year-old also was of the opinion that if the Indian all-rounder demands, he would appoint him the CSK skipper. “There is also no set rule that Samson has to be made the CSK captain. If Hardik demands captaincy, I would make him CSK’s captain because of his excellent relationship with MS Dhoni,” Badrinath said.

The former India batter also supported his statement, citing that his inclusion would add balance and look to take the franchise image to a different level.

Will MI accept CSK’s offer of a trade move of Hardik Pandya?

While the discussions can be unlimited, will MI really look forward to trade Hardik Pandya with Shivam Tube and Ayush Mhatre of CSK? The answer really belongs within the team management. Moreover, it could be a win-win situation for both teams, seeing CSK looking for balance and MI looking at some power-hitters and Dube serves as a like-for-like replacement.

But a bothering point could be Shivam Dube’s downward spiral, whereas Ayush Mhatre showed some form before injury had ruled him out this season. The 32-year-old Dube could only score 270 runs across 13 matches this season in the IPL; he has been key player in the national colours, including his performance in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win, including his 26* off 8 in the finale vs New Zealand.
