ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We’re stuck in a weather rut, and many people aren’t complaining about it! An omega block has been setting up over the country. This is a blocking pattern that keeps our weather “stuck,” and it is called this because it looks like the Greek letter omega. What does it mean for us? It means the bigger summer warmth is locked to our west and we’re under the influence of a milder (if not cool at times) and fairly quiet weather pattern.
Generally speaking, dip in the jet stream over New England combined with an area of high pressure to our west will keep us mainly dry and slightly cooler than average. This means a good deal of sunshine and highs up near 70 on Friday. The one thing we’ll watch for later in the day is a cold front sneaking in by late evening. This will tend to kick up our cloud cover a bit during the afternoon, and also kick up our winds. Aside from a few brief showers Friday evening/night, we should remain dry from this front. Winds will gust near 30mph out of the west, then switch to the north as the front passes through.
This front will knock our temperatures back a bit to start the weekend, with morning lows in the 40s and afternoon highs back into the 60s. Some clouds to start Saturday will give way to a mostly sunny sky by the afternoon. Sunday will be the warmer weekend day, with highs back into the upper 60s to near 70.
If you’re looking for warmer air, look to later next week. It looks like our blocking pattern will begin to break down by the middle of next week, which will allow our temperatures to start to warm back into the 70s with 80s a possibility.
