For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Texas native Nate Garcia, who was a finalist at the 2026 Justin Sectionals, will be sticking close to home this fall, as he announced his commitment to swim for the University of St. Thomas in Houston beginning in the fall of 2026.

“I am humbled and blessed to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of St. Thomas! First, I thank God for blessing me with this opportunity and my family for their constant love and support. I want to thank all of my coaches for shaping me into the person and swimmer I am today, and a special thank you to Coach Huston for giving me the opportunity to continue my swimming career, Go Celts!”

Garcia is wrapping up his senior year at Summer Creek High School in Houston, where he has been a member of the school’s varsity swimming and diving team since his sophomore year. He also currently trains year-round with Eagle Swimming Association, primarily specializing in free, fly and IM.

Garcia most recently competed at the 2026 Justin Sectionals in March, where he earned a second swim in one event. He placed 37th in the 200 fly (1:58.49), in addition to contesting the 200 IM (2:02.85) and 400 IM (4:14.64 – PB).

A few weeks prior, Garcia turned in a series of strong performances at the Gulf 13 & Over Champs (PEAK) in Texas. He placed 5th in the 200 free (1:47.60), 6th in the 100 fly (54.12), 7th in the 200 breast (2:15.55 – PB), 9th in the 100 breast (1:00.96 – SB) and 31st in the 50 free (23.34 – PB). He also finished 16th in the 100 free in 50.50 after posting a season-best time of 50.04 during prelims.

Garcia qualified for the Texas high school state championships for the first time this past season, competing at the 2026 UIL (University Interscholastic League) 6A State Champs in February. He helped his team to a 15th-place finish in the 400 free relay, splitting 48.27 on the third leg.

Earlier this season, Garcia logged personal best times in the 100 fly (53.63) and 200 IM (1:59.53) at the Gulf Invite and UIL District 21-6A Championship, respectively.

A number of Garcia’s top times still stand from previous seasons. He holds lifetime best times in  the 200 fly (1:56.95) and 200 free (1:47.00) from November 2023 from the 2023-2024 season, and in the 100 free (49.55) from the 2024-2025 season.

A Division III program, the University of St. Thomas competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, with the men’s team snagging the runner-up spot at this past season’s conference championships in February. Based on the results from the 2026 SCAC Championships, Garcia would have landed in the ‘A’ final in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 fly and the ‘B’ final in the 100 fly and 200 free, putting him in a position to be a key contributor right from the start.

Joining Garcia in the pool this fall are Aiden Stivers (breast/IM) and Brody Garcia (fly/free), who should both make for strong training partners over the next four years.
