SEC Presidents and Chancellors released a statement on Thursday while concluding the day’s spring meetings in Florida. In the statement, the SEC “recognizes and appreciates” the recent bill released on Thursday by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, which looks to regulate college athletics.
According to CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello, there is a call for regulation within the meetings. However, according to the statement on Thursday, not everything proposed in the bill is considered to be in the best interest of the conference.
The conference released the following statement reaffirming its stance against the portion of the bill which addresses the option of pooling media rights, wishing to avoid ceding its negotiating power to a third party.
“The SEC has been intentional, through years of thoughtful planning and decision-making, in strategically positioning itself for future media negotiations. The conference must retain the ability to act in the best interests of its membership. As such, the SEC does not support assigning its media rights to a third party and remains firmly committed to independently conducting its media negotiations.”
