Gujarat Titans assistant coach Parthiv Patel has slammed critics who have mounted unnecessary external pressure on star batters in the GT lineup and the management, citing their old-school belief in stability over aggression.
The Gujarat Titans have had to face immense criticism despite their team's staggering consistency and performance over the past few seasons in the IPL. The team is immensely successful and never fails to entertain its squad while also adding to its hope of a title triumph every season.
This season as well, they finished second on the points table with 18 points and 9 wins, leveling the tally with table toppers Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The second-place finish helped them qualify for the 1st Qualifier of the IPL 2026 season.
Following their defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, several questions have been raised further over the batting strike rate of their run-scoring players, like Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill.
Backing their approach, which differs from most other openers in the IPL, especially this season, Gujarat Titans assistant coach Parthiv Patel claimed that every team has its own way of playing, and they are well aware of what kind of cricket they want to play.
“We were sitting pretty at No.2 on the points table. I know other teams can think whatever they want to think. There are six teams who have not qualified also. And I know the references that you have come from... See, we have finished No. 2. And we know what kind of cricket we want to play. And we back ourselves to give results.
"Even in the first half of the tournament, when we were not doing that great, we were just doing okay; we still stuck to our process. We trust in our ability," said Patel.
Patel backs Sai Sudharsan as an extremely aware cricketer
Parthiv Patel was also repeatedly questioned about the batting strike rate of his highest-scoring batter, Sai Sudharsan. Sudharsan has been the absolute starlet for them over the past two seasons and is their highest run-scorer.
He is also second in the list of highest run-getters this season after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with 652 runs. However, his strike rate of 152, which is quite low when compared to the openers of other teams. However, as per Patel, the Gujarat Titans are more than happy with Sudharsan's strike rate when put aside his remarkable consistency.
Not only that, but Patel also added that he has been a match-winner for them, and there is no need for him to change his approach just because someone else is striking at 300. Though this gives Sudharsan a sense of responsibility, this is one of the major reasons he is not being considered in the India white-ball sides, despite consecutive performances.
Gujarat Titans have been the most consistent team since their IPL debut
Gujarat Titans have undoubtedly been one of the most consistent teams in the history of the IPL ever since their debut in 2022. They won the title under Hardik Pandya's captaincy in the very first season and reached the finals of the next season in hopes of defending their title.
"Since the last 4-5 years, we have qualified one year. We were champions one year, runner’s up once. The results are there for everyone to see. Everybody has their different way of playing. We have our own style of playing," said the GT assistant coach.
The coach, after having reflected on their tremendous success, added that the Titans unit is well aware of their strengths and would love to do the same against the Rajasthan Royals in the second qualifier.
He added, "We know what we can do. And that's something that we will try and do tomorrow as well. We feel that we are a very good unit. And if we go out there and execute our plans, I think we can win that game.”
