Mumbai Ranji Trophy cricketer Siddhesh Lad has once again reignited the ‘IPL vs domestic’ debate, stating that it is the league’s performances that warrant a place in Team India. Speaking on the sidelines of a jersey launch event for MSC Maratha Royals, the veteran Ranji player also advised the youngsters to take the shorter route. “That’s the harsh reality,” Lad said on Thursday. “I am not saying pick me because I performed, but someone like Auqib Nabi was well deserving. If you perform consistently, win tournaments and still don’t get rewarded, players naturally start thinking differently.”
“If a player performs well in T20 Mumbai and breaks into IPL, there is a shortcut to Indian cricket now,” Lad was quoted as saying by Sportstar. “You can play Ranji Trophy for years, but one good IPL season can change everything. So yes, I would advise youngsters to keep that route in mind too.”

But then this phenomenon is only hurting the Indian domestic structure, and Indian cricket at large. Lad spoke only on what was visible from selectors’ actions. “At the start, everyone says perform in Ranji Trophy and you will play for India. But when selections happen, sometimes you see something different,” he said.
Forget Auqib Nabi, there are a lot more examples on this list. Take for instance Abhimanyu Easwaran. He was picked as a backup opener for the England series last year, never made a debut and then was forgotten. One doesn’t know if he will get to play for the national side of not; of course isn’t part of the IPL.
There is a certain Sarfaraz Khan too. Played a few Tests, but somehow is not being preferred now. That might be because, until the previous season, he wasn’t a regular in the IPL, but this year he was picked by CSK.
